Dorothy Parker and Martin Luther King, Jr.

Most people know Dorothy Parker as the acerbic wit  famous for lines like, "The first thing I do in the morning is brush my teeth and sharpen my tongue."  Few know that she was a passionate advocate for civil rights, and that her proudest moment was being arrested for protesting the execution of Sacco and Vanzetti, two Italian immigrants convicted of murder in a tragically biased trial.

Perhaps most telling of all, Mrs. Parker left her entire estate to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Upon his passing a year later, it was transferred to the NAACP.

Thanks for the very informative post, Ellen. I did not know this, but am not surprised. She was an extraordinary lady in a lot of ways!

Love the quote from Dorothy Parker and that she was an advocate for civil rights. You made me laugh with her "biting tongue".
